Chapter Twelve
Monday at work is going by steadily. I’m firing off a couple of emails to a caterer and a security company when, just after midday, the phone rings and I answer distractedly.
“Trey Bromley.”
Meg replies from reception, “Trey. There’s a gentleman here to see you. He doesn’t have an appointment.” Her voice quietens down to a whisper. “It’s that security guard… um… David?”
My eyes widen in surprise and I stop what I’m doing. He’s here? What the hell?
I hadn’t told Meg that we were sort of seeing each other and I’m just about to tell her that it’s fine and he can come in, when her voice comes back on in a high pitch. “No, sir, wait! You can’t just walk in—”
A deep voice can be heard on the phone, but more clearly just outside my office. “It’s just through here, isn’t it? His name’s on”—my office door flies open to reveal David—“the door.” I observe him as I slowly stand. To put it simply, he looks like hell. Actually, he looks worse than me. It takes a minute for my concentration to veer away from the sight of him in a grey hoodie and black jeans. The sleeves are rolled up, and although his eyes reveal a deep sadness, David is livid. I see this in the way he’s breathing and the furrow of his brows. What the fuck? I clear my throat and finally face a stressed-out Meg at my door.
She huffs. “I’m sorry, Trey. He just walked right in.”
“It’s okay,” I say with a weak wave of my hand. “Meg, could you please call Mrs Rodgers and bump our lunch meeting from twelve thirty to one?”
She sighs in relief that I’m not mad, and smiles. “Of course.”
Just before she’s out of earshot, I ask her, “Could you please close the door?”
I start to rub my sore eyes just before David pipes up. “It’s okay, sweetie, I can close the door. It’s obviously too big a job for his highness over here.” His words send a pang to my chest. He starts to move towards the doorway as Meg tilts her head to glance over at me and glare at David.
“Excuse me?” Meg asks stridently. “Don’t make out that Trey’s some snobby arsehole.” She places her hands on her hips. “He’s the best boss I’ve ever had, and it’s an honour to work for him. And if he asks me to close the door for some privacy, I’m quite happy to do it.” She doesn’t give him a chance to reply before she turns to me. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
Giving her a genuine smile now, I say, “I’m fine. Thank you, Meg.”
“You got it, boss.”
She gives David a withering stare and closes the door behind her. Clearing my throat, I sit down and suggest David does the same, gesturing to one of the two chairs in front of my desk.
He shakes his head. “I’m not here to stay long.”
I swallow thickly, trying to keep my emotions at bay.
